What you really need to know about what the public really thinks about GM foods

(Last reviewed: 30 Jun 2008)

Biotechnology Australia ceased operations on 30 June 2008. The information on this website has been archived and is no longer updated.

This report has been produced by Biotechnology Australia with the aim of pooling the best and most up-to-date consumer research into public attitudes towards genetically modified foods to provide a simple overview document that spells out the complexity of public attitudes in a simple format.

While many in-depth consumer attitude studies have been conducted internationally for several years, few of them find their way outside the disciplines in which they are conducted, and the majority of simplistic studies that get media coverage do not do justice to way that the public really think in relation to GM foods.

This report is important in that it seeks to provide an accurate statement of research undertaken that can be used to better inform understanding of community attitudes – something which is often misunderstood or misrepresented.

As the report seeks to provide a short guide to complex issues, readers seeking more detail should refer to the references cited.
