The Australian Biotechnology Advisory Council (ABAC) is a body of experts appointed to provide high level independent advice to the Australian Government on priority issues in biotechnology, including research and development, international links, commercialisation, public interest and ethics. ABAC has played a significant role in the reviews of the National Biotechnology Strategy, and meets with the Australian Government Biotechnology Ministerial Council to discuss issues emerging in the sector.
ABAC was formed in March 2002.
The Council’s terms of reference are:
In order to ensure the Government’s biotechnology policies are based on informed and expert advice, ABAC will:
- Provide high-level independent advice on the role of government, industry and research in biotechnology development in Australia to the Commonwealth Biotechnology Ministerial Council, including on the further development and implementation of the National Biotechnology Strategy;
- Advise on important biotechnology issues including relation to economic growth, employment creation, the development of new industries and the sustainable development of new resources; and
- Undertake work as requested, including through working groups, to advise on government policies and programs in support of biotechnology development on Australia.
